Long sought after for its natural hot springs, the town of Calistoga sits at the northernmost tip of the Napa Valley. Founded during the 1860s as a spa town, Calistoga's economy still hinges on its prized waters, now bottled by Crystal Geyser and Calistoga Water. Visitors soak up Calistoga's signature mud spa treatments, which were first enjoyed by the indigenous Wappo people who once inhabited the area.

Named by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of just a dozen Distinctive Destinations, Calistoga was founded by a New England transplant, Sam Brannan, who became California's first millionaire after publishing San Francisco's first English-language newspaper. Later, Robert Louis Stevenson immortalized Calistoga in his 1883 book The Silverado Squatters, in which he describes his experience camping in an old mining bunk there.

Nestled at the foot of Mount St. Helena and bordered by the Palisades and by the viticulturally famous Mayacamas Mountains, Calistoga is home to roughly 30 wineries, most notably the historic Schramsberg Cellars, boasting caves that were hand-dug in the 19th century by Chinese workers, and Sterling Vineyards, which ushers visitors to its hill-top tasting room via funicular.

The town's natural wonders include the Petrified Forest of Redwoods, which a volcanic eruption formed three million years ago; the Palisades, an outcropping of volcanic rock that serves a popular hiking destination; and Old Faithful Geyser, which spurts up to three or four times an hour.
